Os intelectuais cariocas, o modernismo e o nacionalismo: O caso de Festa1

Angela de Castro Gomes

This article examines the activities of Brazilian intellectuals in the first decades of the twentieth century, in which their importance for the proposal and implementation of the projects of modern Brazil stands out. The article’s purpose is to try to understand the space and climate in which those intellectuals moved during a period that witnessed great transformations in the country. It further attempts to capture the socio-political and cultural ambience of Rio de Janeiro in order to then map out a dynamic for the articulation of groups of intellectuals, paying special attention to the case of the journal Festa. The approach here emphasizes the examination of newspapers and correspondence, among other types of association, conceiving of them as sites of sociability, where intellectuals organized themselves in order to construct and distribute their proposals.
