This study examines the presence of the Portuguese language as a theme in Caetano Velosos songwriting, prose, and interviews. Focusing specifically on two of his songs, "É proibido proibir" and "Língua," the discussion aims to discern Velosos contradictory stance on language, aesthetics and ideology. For contextualization and further insight into Velosos linguistics and cultural politics, his views are compared to those of Olavo Bilac, in his poem "Língua portuguesa," and to those of Fernando Pessoa, in his books Mensagem and A língua portuguesa.
