If we take into consideration that the ficctional work of Machado de Assis had as one of its goals, the circulation in various newspapers (on which he also published non fictional articles), we can develop a new kind of interpretation of his short stories and novels. Machado’s ficctional work is read nowadays in book form and (as is the case for many of the short stories) in anthologies, which means that much of the criticism on Machado de Assis is detached from the plausible meanings that the relationship between reading and writing (or even between literary writing and journalistic writing) can trigger. To understand and explore such a relationship is the goal of this article.
