Children of the Inquisition: Minors as Familiares of the Inquisition in Pernambuco, Brazil, 1613–1821

Crianças e jovens menores trabalhavam para a Inquisição no Pernambuco colonial. Até um terço dos familiares de Pernambuco tinha menos de vinte e nove anos. Dois fatores explicam este fenômeno: primeiro, a Inquisição transformou-se de um tribunal de repressão em uma instituição de promoção social nos fins do século XVII. E segundo, as famílias pernambucanas reconheceram na Inquisição uma instituição através da qual poderiam se promover socialmente. Uma carta de um familiar provava a limpeza do sangue e a honra da família, o que também permitia acesso às instituições privilegiadas. Assim as famílias ganhavam honra, prestígio, e privilégio e a Inquisição ganhava uma larga base de apoio social.
