Para muitos a palavra "coronelismo" evoca imagens de um passado remoto. No mundo acadêmico o conceito é usado por cientistas políticos, sociólogos, e historiadores, que o usam em vários sentidos, sem concordar sobre o que realmente significava. Uma discussão comparativa das práticas políticas existentes no estado de São Paulo durante o primeiro terço do século vinte sugere uma explicação para estas divergências e também oferece a oportunidade para uma discussão da utilidade do próprio conceito.
