The Struggle for the State: Partisan Conflict and the Origins of the Praieira Revolt in Imperial Brazil

Com o processo de independência, abriramse três décadas de luta para formar o novo estado brasileiro. Grupos diversos lutaram sobre a maneira de incorporarse ao sistema, a natureza da autoridade política, e a distribuição de poder. Este artigo examina as origens da Revolta Praieira, a última das grandes revoltas que desafiaram as instituições do império. Uma análise das origens da Revolta Praieira ilumina o funcionamento do sistema político. O fracasso da revolta demonstrou a futilidade de desafiar a autoridade nacional e indicou a consolidação da nova ordem. Este trabalho ajuda a superar a falta de estudos que especificam os nexos entre a política nacional e a política provincial.
