Film and the Crônica: Documenting New Urban Experiences in Turn of the Century Rio de Janeiro

Este ensaio analisa duas crônicas escritas no Brasil no começo do século vinte: "Moléstia da época" (1906) de Olavo Bilac e "Cinematógrafo de letras" (1909) de João do Rio. Estas crônicas discutem um meio recentemente chegado ao país—o cinema. O ensaio examina como as crônicas documentam esta nova invenção, e especialmente analisa as diversas maneiras em que os textos ressaltam uma forte ligação entre o cinema e um novo espaço urbano no Rio de Janeiro na virada do século, um novo espaço que tanto afetou o cotidiano carioca como a cidade letrada.
