Nationalizing the Bard: Contemporary Performances of Shakespeare at Portuguese National Theatres

Este artigo analisa mediações entre o local, o nacional e o global em duas produções de Shakespeare apresentadas por teatros nacionais portugueses. o Rei Lear do Teatro Nacional D. Maria II em Lisboa e a segunda, a Noite de Reis do Teatro Nacional São João no Porto, ambas de 1998. Partindo de considerações prévias sobre o papel de um teatro nacional num contexto globalizado, discutem-se as diferenças subjacentes às noções de internacionalização dos dois teatros, sendo depois focadas as representações de género e sexualidade nestas duas produções. O artigo identifica uma divergência entre as possibilidades performativas das actrizes e dos actores nestas duas produções, assim como os factores que contribuíram para esta diferenciação. Sublinha ainda as interligações entre televisão, cinema e teatro que caracterizam as duas produções. Conclui tecendo alguns comentários sobre as configurações contemporâneas dos dois teatros, atribuindo destaque particular às reacções divergentes relativamente à questão da internacionalização da prática teatral, bem como à necessidade de representações renegociadas de género e sexualidade em produções portuguesas de Shakespeare.
