Abstract
The essay aims to conceive some of the obstacles that the literary, critical, academic and institutional triumph of modernism poses both to “1922 Modernism” and to Brazilian literature before and after the Week of Modern Art. This is done by comparing the fields of literature, music and plastic arts, and by considering the possible effects on the study of literature in Brazil of a breakdown of the critical system founded upon the triumph of modernism.
