Abstract
Written in English, the tragedy The Duke of Parma is one of the many unfinished works by Fernando Pessoa (1888–1935). This article seeks to collect and interpret the references to this tragedy in the lists contained in documents kept at the Pessoa archive, housed at the National Library of Portugal. The interpretation unfolds in two stages: first, a preliminary reassessment of list-type documents according to theories about Pessoa’s oeuvre; then, an analysis of the available data considering three broad categories: chronology, organization (by language and by genre), and function. The first stage consists of a review of the theory of latent work as derived from the tension between intentions as documented in lists and the published form. The second stage seeks to empirically interpret the references to The Duke of Parma, which point to this drama’s special status within Pessoa’s literary output in English. In the end, some desiderata regarding future developments of this line of research are presented.
A tragédia The Duke of Parma, redigida em língua inglesa, é um dos muitos textos fragmentários escritos por Fernando Pessoa (1888–1935). Este artigo procura coligir e interpretar as referências a esta tragédia nas listas transmitidas por documentos guardados no espólio de Pessoa, que se conserva na Biblioteca Nacional de Portugal. A interpretação desenrola-se em duas etapas: primeiro, uma reavaliação preliminar dos documentos pertencentes à tipologia da lista, de acordo com teorias sobre a obra de Pessoa; depois, uma análise dos dados disponíveis tendo em consideração três categorias genéricas: cronologia, organização (por língua e por género) e função. A primeira etapa consiste numa revisão da teoria da obra enquanto resultado da tensão entre intenções, documentadas em listas, e a publicação. Quanto à segunda etapa, procura-se interpretar empiricamente as referências a The Duke of Parma, que apontam para o estatuto especial deste drama no âmbito da produção literária pessoana em inglês. No fim, são apresentados alguns desiderata a propósito de futuros desenvolvimentos desta linha de investigação.
