Machado’s ficctional work is read nowadays in book form and (as is the case for many of the short stories) in anthologies, which means that much of the criticism on Machado de Assis is detached from the plausible meanings that the relationship between reading and writing (or even between literary writing and journalistic writing) can trigger. To understand and explore such a relationship is the goal of this article.
