AB  - This paper studies the women of the captaincy of Paraíba from the perspective of women’s history and legal history in colonial Brazil since the period following the Dutch occupation, in 1661, until Brazilian Independence, in 1822. For that purpose, I used documents from the Overseas Lisbon Council Archive and the legal background that contextualized this period. In those sources, I identified specific aspects related to the matrimonial property division regimes shaped by the Ius Commune and the Portuguese Ius Proprium, specifically the regimes of dotes e arras and carta de ametade. I compared the primary sources treating everyday situations to the normative system in force in order to identify the peculiarities of application of the dotes e arras and carta de ametade regimes in the Captaincy of Paraíba, as part of a global Empire, and how practices can inform us on local peculiarities.
