For that purpose, I used documents from the Overseas Lisbon Council Archive and the legal background that contextualized this period. In those sources, I identified specific aspects related to the matrimonial property division regimes shaped by the Ius Commune and the Portuguese Ius Proprium, specifically the regimes of dotes e arras and carta de ametade. I compared the primary sources treating everyday situations to the normative system in force in order to identify the peculiarities of application of the dotes e arras and carta de ametade regimes in the Captaincy of Paraíba, as part of a global Empire, and how practices can inform us on local peculiarities.
