Based on Medeiros Braga{\textquoteright}s ideas about the Portuguese writer, I propose an interpretation of socialism by both Saramago and the Brazilian author. I argue in favor of what Saramago said about himself: he did not see himself as a writer who was a communist, but as a communist who was a writer. At the same time, I show that the formula {\textquotedblleft}writer who was a communist{\textquotedblright} fits Medeiros Braga.}, issn = {0024-7413}, URL = {https://lbr.uwpress.org/content/58/2/34}, eprint = {https://lbr.uwpress.org/content/58/2/34.full.pdf}, journal = {Luso-Brazilian Review} }
