AB  - This essay recovers the presence of plays that reworked themes and situations from Renaissance drama into British drama and theater of the Romantic era to the late Victorian period. Studies of this phase of Britain’s dramatic and theatrical history feature references to neo-Renaissance plays, yet there is no available overview of this “Elizabethanizing” phenomenon that, over the entire century, characterized the production of original, serious drama, both for the stage and for the closet. In sketching out a tentative history of neo-Renaissance plays in nineteenth-century Britain, this essay seeks to offer a possible background for Fernando Pessoa’s Duke of Parma, and thus a further contribution to contextualizing it within the development of Britain’s nineteenth-century drama and theater.Este ensaio recupera a presença de peças que trabalharam com temas e situa- ções do drama renascentista, incorporando-os no teatro britânico do período romântico até o final da era vitoriana. Estudos desta fase da história dramática e teatral da Inglaterra incluem referências a peças neorrenascentistas, porém não existe nenhum panorama disponível sobre este fenómeno que, ao longo do século, caracterizou a produção de drama original e sério, tanto para o palco quanto para leitura. Ao esboçar uma história tentativa das peças neorrenascentistas na Inglaterra oitocentista, este ensaio visa oferecer um possível pano-de-fundo para The Duke of Parma de Fernando Pessoa, e assim contribuir ainda mais para a contextualização dela dentro do desenvolvimento do drama e teatro oitocentistas na Inglaterra.
